How has communication changed in the last year?

A year that carried assorted variants of the pandemic along with it, the last year had been a journey of twists and turmoils yet an ever-evolving one. A world that is too busy running after money, fame, positions, technology and more, is constantly growing and progressing with time. With all the changes around, Communication has also taken twists and turns in recent years like no other.

One of the integral aspects of human existence, it is no wonder that communication plays a climacteric role in the society that we live in. In years gone by, we were pretty particular in the ways that we could communicate. But we have come a long way. Fast forward to modern times and with the power of the internet, there are tremendous changes in the ways that we communicate with each other. But just how has the norm shifted in the previous year?

The pandemic driven and splintered world was not quite prepared to accept the abrupt changes brought by COVID-19, say in every aspect of life. But with the evolving pandemic, the ways with which people used to communicate had an incremental shift from social to virtual. Communication has become more immediate and instant than ever. Along with the many cataclysmic changes Covid-19 has drawn in our lives, it has distorted forever the way we communicate. Predominantly, communication has revamped from a source-to-consumer prototype to a consumer-to-consumer prototype. Because all the customary social conventions have been put on hold, amended and shifted throughout the pandemic, we needed to find a new means to stay connected. And this eventually resulted in shifting from in-person conversations to online modes of communication such as video conferencing, phone calls, texts, or email. Above all, when in public, we were made to wear masks that exclusively hindered our typical mode of communication because all the facial cues get concealed. As we adapt to this new normal, it comes to be an exceptionally emotional time with a precise level of unrest, frustration, and a loss of in-person connection we were used to. Studies also indicate that we now manage to trust nonverbal communication cues over verbal language.

From being a socially and culturally connected community, people tend to dwell in a digital space where privacy and individuality are given. Even Businesses have had a paradigm shift in the last year. The number of mobile web users has now outstripped desktop counterparts as smartphones are more promising and adaptable. They serve as a basic lifeline to a global network, whether it's personal or professional.

A decade ago, innovation and the creation of all-new digital solutions have driven the world to use a more convenient way of communication. The role of technology in the evolution of communication is manifold. Due to the comfort of communication, today's cultural climate has even become virtually unrecognisable. Trends are picked up and dropped faster than ever. And thanks to this technology. Ever since the pandemic began to ravage the world, the whole new way of communication was possible only because of technology. When social isolation rises, it affects relationships and it's not healthy in the long term. Effective communication has always been the key to all healthy relationships.

Communication as a whole has become socialised and highly segmented. The internet has had a vital role in the empowerment of insignificant groups and movements in becoming social. Since communication back and forth is done closer to real-time, it is much easier to get a ‘viral’ response to popular communication. Subsequently, society at large is in a metamorphosis away from the time-honoured power structures to new ones that can better deal with its communications in a social-friendly way. Covid-19 has left us with a new mode of communication. However, language as we know it crumbles in the face of the devastation it has caused. While talking about language, how enthralling it is that language, accent and dialect change so much besides the geographical challenges and discrepancies posed by the countries.

The shift in style is also relevant when it comes to businesses. Businesses were required to assure business continuity and client retention in light of the global epidemic. The shift of Brands from retail to digital was accelerated by the pandemic. For businesses to grow and cherish, Proactive communication became the need of the hour. The role of social media in mellowing communication curves are also tremendous. Popular Social Apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram and Twitter have taken communication to another level which further accelerated the barriers in communication in the pandemic pummeled society. We all have vouched for a paradigm shift in the usage of the Signal App when WhatsApp tried to update its privacy policies. That was one of the examples of how much dependent people are on these social Apps that perpetrate communication regularly. The change in the communication trend can be perceived as explicit and constructive. And this trend is not going to stay forever. It keeps evolving with time, but certainly with technology.
