Santosh K, EVP & CEO, Futurism TechnologiesDuring a panel discussion on implementation of IOT in the industry, one of the points discussed was about to identify a process, which we want to improve and then implement IOT to gain better ROI. In continuation to the discussion, it was put forward that any technology implementation should start from identifying a need to change in the process and technology can be an enabler to implement that change. If implemented in this way, business can see better ROI and resulting in to satisfied customers.

The core focus was on the processes rather than the technology alone. The Digital transformation no doubt is changing our lives. Be small things like no paper receipt for payroll or no telephone directory in every home; or customer experience when they walk in to a pizza shop, the recommendations that they get while doing online shopping; highlights how things in our day-to-day life have changed due to this digital disruption. In addition, this new age digital transformation would continue to stay.

Some strong reasons why India can lead the change in technology landscape are –
• Start-up ecosystem: Indian startup ecosystem is at maturing curve. Armed with local and global funding, Indian startup ecosystem is developing excellent products. It could be innovative IOT platform or a new way of implementing data analytics solutions or building a deep learning algorithm solving a major social problem, these startups are real differentiators. These kinds of innovative solutions will make impact on global canvas as well.

• Domain(Industry)Competency: Indian software industry has developed deep domain competencies in the recent decade, in order to develop industry specific solutions for their
customers. Over the years, this domain competency was enriched and today it has become a great asset. New age technology needs a deep knowledge about the customers’ business and areas where we can bring the improvement. As mentioned earlier, we need to identify the improvement areas in business process and use technology as enabler. This industry knowledge about the customers or perhaps customer’s customer is fueling new disruptive solutions.

• Ability to Change and Adopt: The Indian IT industry is very agile and can adapt to the changes quickly. The industry has been witnessed to adopting new business models and practically redefining itself during Y2K; then in dotcom era and off late during the 2008 slowdown. As we can see quarterly results of Indian software companies; the business from digital services is on constant rise and this clearly proves that IT industry is participating in digital transformation deals. Most importantly, the investment done towards building new competencies, retraining the existing workforce in digital technologies is significant. This clearly gives an indication that we now know what it takes to be a leader in digital transformation services, which are essentially new age technologies.

Any technology implementation should start from identifying a need to change in the process and technology can be an enabler to implement that change

• Change in Mindset: We clearly see a change in mindset when comes to delivery models. Large and midsize IT companies in India are willing to work in startups to gain niche domain competency, collaborate with them in providing quality solutions to the customers. Some companies have gone one-step ahead and have done strategic investments in these kinds of niche companies. This change in mindset has arrived from the fact that large/midsize organizations have clearly understood the value the startup ecosystem is bringing in.

While there are many such positive points where it is quite evident, that India can take leadership position. But, we also need to look at some changes we need to make to our delivery or service models in order to be successful.

The old delivery model or delivering the code and cost arbitrage has long gone. In order to build the differentiator, we need to understand my customer’s business and the new delivery model largely driven from the ROI to the customer. This needs a huge mindset shift and training. Also, a new technology does n’t demand too much programing effort; it needs business analysts. Here again, there is a change in mindset required.

While there are challenges exist; India still possesses all the competitive advantage to build a new age industry, implementing new solutions, and new technologies and be a leader in the world map.
