Innovation, Trends and Predictions for Open-Source Systems

The most compelling advantage of an open source database, such as PostgreSQL (also known as Postgres), is that it is a springboard for innovation. This is driving the industry-wide adoption of open source as a key component in the new IT stack. Postgres is the most transformative open source technology since Linux. This is validated by the fact that Postgres continues to be the most loved, used and wanted database by developers, according to StackOverflow. More and more, enterprises are replacing their legacy systems and adopting Postgres to support their mission-critical applications.

At EnterpriseDB (EDB) we believe that 2022 was the tipping point for Postgres, and we expect to see Postgres become the enterprise standard within the next five years. Legacy systems like Oracle are no longer technically superior nor cost effective. Enterprises are shifting to open source models to compete and stay relevant in today’s challenging market, and Postgres is the option they prefer. Flexible deployment options, risk mitigation and strong security will drive even greater adoption of Postgres into next year. It’s crucial to utilise agile solutions that adapt to the speed of the business, but it is also important to use solutions that developers love to avoid any stalling in developer innovation.

Indian market for cloud business

Organizations in India are adopting cloud-first technology to move faster in their domain while improving cost and time efficiencies. Gartner predicts that 75% of global databases will be on the cloud by the end of this year. While we think that’s an aggressive number, we do believe that most enterprises will at least move to a hybrid cloud environment, where some applications remain on premises, while new applications are built in the cloud.

As businesses plan their cloud migration, they look to technologies that can help them compete and react in a landscape that values speed and quality over everything else. Solutions that provide agility, scalability, high performance, and security, while also minimizing the time spent on maintenance, provisioning, and administrative overhead are sought after. Choosing the right database strategy and the right cloud migration, will be particularly critical for an organisation’s overall success and you will continue to see the popularity and adoption of Postgres continue to rise.

Future in India for Technology and Innovation

In order for businesses to stay agile and future-proof digital solutions, they need to include open source databases on their digital roadmap. You will therefore see the popularity and adoption of Postgres continue to rise over the next few years, especially in banking and government institutions.

Our overall objective over the next several years is to continue to innovate, build and leverage the larger community and ecosystem around Postgres so that our customers can accelerate their Postgres and business transformation, without limits. We’ve established ourselves as one of India’s largest development and support centers globally. We currently support over 150+ customers in the region with a very strong emphasis on BFSI and telecom, and we also work closely with the Central and State governments in implementing and supporting them on citizen-centric applications.

Most recently, we built on our commitment to the Community and our customers with innovative contributions to PostgreSQL® 15, including the highly anticipated MERGE SQL command, making it easier for enterprises to migrate from expensive, legacy databases to open source. Postgres 15 also features improved database security, enhanced backup and recovery options, and advanced logical replication capabilities, further demonstrating the value delivered to enterprises by way of the pace of innovation and benefits of a community driven open source database.

The Evolution of Cloud in India and US

Gone are the days of relying on fully on-premises databases. Enterprises are realizing the importance of data ownership and portability and are looking for options that reduce dependency on a single vendor.
Open source databases such as Postgres offer an advantage here, as organisations can run the same Postgres on any cloud platform without vendor lock-in. The pace of innovation, as well as time and cost savings are leading enterprises to migrate from fully on-premises databases towards hybrid and even fully managed cloud DBMS. And digital transformation will continue to accelerate this adoption moving forward.

Go to Market (GTM) strategy in India

Our majority growth investment from Bain Capital Private Equity this year further validates the growing power of Postgres. This substantial investment supports our GTM strategy focused on accelerating our engineering and service capabilities in India, with a heavy emphasis on expanding our cloud-based technologies.

We are the largest contributor to PostgreSQL code in the world and we have made a commitment to our customers to maintain that position. Our model in India is built on a hybrid approach—we work directly with our key customers while maintaining strong alliances with Global Partners and local partners to maximize our offerings.
