siliconindia questions Sanjay on how the year 2020 was for the technology sector and what it has in its kitty in 2021.

How has been the year for Technology sector with disruption due to the pandemic?
In the year 2020, a lot has changed due to the Covid pandemic. While the disruption caused by the pandemic brought radical changes and equipped businesses to quickly adapt to the new normal, there were many businesses that struggled to survive. But one thing that turned out to be the saviour for organizations across industries was the rightful use of technology which enabled a quick transition to a less-contact society. With wireless networking technologies, cloud-based tools, IoT and many other cutting-edge technologies, businesses were able to quickly adapt to the new normal. The effort to cope with the epidemic has resulted in dramatic changes across sectors, making way for wider adoption of digital technologies.

Semiconductors are at the core of almost every industry as they play a key role in development and support of many critical areas

Key Highlights from the year 2020?
Semiconductors are at the core of almost every industry as they play a key role in development and support of many critical areas. And this has all risen manifold due to the ongoing pandemic. After Covid, we have been seeing the emergence of a contact-less society, which has transformed the way we interact, ensuring minimal human intervention. Going forward, there is going be a greater focus on the evolution and rapid adoption of new-age technologies in both our professional as well as personal lives, as innovations based on disruptive technologies will assist in social distancing and maintaining hygienic practices.

The pandemic outbreak has acted as a catalyst in the growth of digital payments as well. Since currency bills carry a risk of virus transmission, contactless digital payments are becoming the norm so as to avoid the spread of COVID-19. In fact, more and more Indians are switching to digital payments in the post-Covid era and we are going to witness a permanent push towards digital/online interfaces in times to come. The fear of contracting virus in lieu of touching surfaces also spurted a shift from fingerprint systems to facial recognition in many office premises and other areas.

The emergence of contactless society has also given rise to innovations in the wireless technologies like UWB, pushing masses to embrace the Internet of Things as they brace themselves for a contactless lifestyle on-the-go in this new normal. These have further given rise to a number of use cases involving smart homes and smart cities ecosystem, smart & secure communications between IoT devices, and in connected mobility sphere such as providing advanced security, safety and convenience in vehicles. Furthermore, the onset of the pandemic has also given the much-needed push to the automotive industry as it gears up to deploy innovative technologies in the existing mainframes of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and semi-autonomous vehicles.

Outlook for the coming year 2021?
The progression in technology in the last couple of years has changed the world and it will continue to do so in the future as well. As we move into 2021, here's how businesses can move forward with some of the most promising developments.

•Contactless technologies such as digital payments, facial recognition, online education and other smart devices have been embraced on an overwhelming scale in 2020. The current pandemic has been a catalyst for the next phase of digital change, and contactless technology will continue to pave the way for a macro-level, contactless society.
•Artificial Intelligence will become more prominent than ever. Coupled with machine learning algorithms, huge chunks of data and crafting out successful plots from the same will be seen through it. AI will play a significant role in the transformation of industries and related operations and will be induced in areas ranging from enterprise-related activities to supply chain automation to emergency management systems in the smart city environment, while further transforming advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous vehicles.
•The electronic and semiconductor fraternity estimates that IoT will reshape the industry in 2021. In fact, IoT evolution from the mere Internet of Things to Intelligence of Things through AI integration will likely be seen in the coming year. These AI-enabled devices will envisage an era of connected intelligent manufacturing and will pave way for the Industry 4.0.
•The emergence of safety sensors in cars should continue to grow in the automotive sector and with the current pandemic, vehicle automation will be a key priority. Experts believe that autonomous vehicles can play a key role in tackling the future pandemics, and therefore the amount of investment in the sector is projected to be exponential. In addition, it would also help achieve automation in the supply chain sector as well. Electric Vehicles are another area expected to see some great action in order to add value to the worldwide carbon-free revolution.
•The growth of IoT, autonomous cars, the ecosystem of smart devices and 5G have highlighted the need to focus more on EDGE computing. The demand for high-speed networks is also growing with the next wave of digital transformation spreading through the globe at an accelerated pace because of Covid, making Edge Computing more relevant now.
•Secure and seamless wireless technologies such as Ultrawideband (UWB) and NFC will continue to run the show over the next year as well. Owing to their precision capabilities and other advantages over others in the wireless tech family, these will provide better and enhanced use cases for tech industry as well as for social welfare
